Kids in Weddings: Let the Entertainment Begin

Everyone knows that kids can steal a show. And yet the entertainment is always worth it. Here are some of my favorite examples among the ceremonies I’ve performed.
There was the two-year-old ring bearer in a baby tux with half pants and shiny black shoes who started up the aisle, and upon seeing all eyes upon him, began to cry. With some coaxing from Dad on the sidelines, he finished his walk with a corner of the ring pillow hanging from his teeth! I guess at that age, one takes his security object wherever he can get it.
More often, kids enjoy the attention. Another ring bearer and flower girl walked together, clinging to each other, arm in arm, with matching grins on their faces. I’m sure someone had coached the tiny tots to go S-L-O-W. They took the direction very literally, creeping up the aisle at a snail’s pace, to the great amusements of all the guests. The bride had a hard act to follow.
One question is whether small children should stay up front with the bridal party during the ceremony, or sit down and hopefully be entertained by family. The latter choice is ideal, to avoid the child who makes a spectacle of himself, for example, by picking his nose in front of God and everybody. Alas, the brest laid plans do not always work. One bride’s eight-month-old daughter sat on Grandma’s lap in the front row, but when the baby saw her mother, she wasn’t having anyone else, and made her wishes very loud and clear. So the bride ended up with her baby on one arm and her bouquet on the other. One could say she was literally juggling marriage and motherhood.
Kids–you just gotta love ‘em. They may sometimes steal the show, but they fill our photo albums with adorable moments and memories that last for generations.
