Bulgarian Wedding Traditions

This last week-end I had a wedding for a bride who was from Bulgaria. She had her gown made by a seamstress in Bulgaria. It was strapless with an embroidered organza skirt over taffeta - very pretty and a bit different from what we see in this country.

The ceremony was much like a traditional American wedding, except that the bride stands on the right and the groom on the left. In the Bulgarian tradition, at the end of the ceremony, the mother of the bride breaks small pieces off a loaf of wedding bread, dips them in honey and gives a piece to the bride and groom. My understanding is that by giving the bread, the mother is asking a blessing on them that they might not want for the necessities of life. The honey signifies having a sweet life, free from trials and heartaches.

After the breaking of the bread, the couple kiss and are introduced as husband and wife. As they prepare to exit, the mother spills a small amount of water out on the ground in front of them to signify that their love might flow like water.

We were fortunate to find a new deli and bakery in a nearby city that specializes in Romanian and Bulgarian baked goods. The owner provided several loaves of the special wedding bread to share with guests.
